I met Coach McCray in 5th grade when he was my PE teacher and basketball coach at Portland Adventist Elementary School, and I never could have imagined the impact he’d have on my life. I spent lunches in his office talking about sports, family, and life, and he always listened and cared. Even after I left middle school, he kept checking in, asking how softball was going, and supporting me through every stage of my journey. He even flew back to Portland for my high school graduation. His support has meant so much, and his impact goes far beyond sports.

Coach McCray is one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. Sometimes I wish I could reclass just to play one more year with him because of how much he helped my development. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have learned how to score without even needing to put the ball on the floor. That skill alone made it tough for any defender to guard me. The constant work we put in together transformed me into a better point guard and prepared me for high school basketball. As a starter and key contributor to our team, everything he taught me showed up in real games. That foundation is a big reason why I’m now starting as a freshman on the JV team at John F. Kennedy High School. I’m grateful for the impact he had on my game and my confidence as a player.
